Superior Afghan Saffron.

The Consortium sells only Superior Afghan Saffron, grown across the Herat region and packed at origin in Herat. Every pack carries its lot documentation and its QR code, so the quality is not asserted, it is shown.

The grades

Three grades, one standard.

Saffron is graded by how much of the red stigma the thread carries, and how little of the pale style. The Consortium works with three grades, and a professional buyer chooses by use and budget:

  1. A shallow white dish heaped with long, even, deep-red saffron filaments, a few lying on the sweep beside it

    Super Negin

The top selection: the longest, thickest, all-red threads, chosen for the highest colour, aroma and visual quality.

  2. A white dish under a tall cone of whole red saffron threads, with threads spilled around its foot

    Negin

Long, whole red threads, cut clean of the style. A premium grade, prized for its appearance and its consistency.

  3. A white dish of red saffron threads shot through with pale orange-yellow style, loose threads scattered in front of it

    Pushal

Red stigmas with a small portion of the style still attached. A characterful grade with strong colouring power, well suited to cooking where aroma and colour matter most.

ISO 3632

Quality you can read, lot by lot.

The Consortium does not ask buyers to take grade names on trust. Every lot is analyzed under ISO 3632, the international method for saffron, which measures its coloring strength (crocin), aroma (safranal) and bitterness (picrocrocin), together with moisture, ash and foreign matter. The figures for the exact lot travel with the shipment and sit behind the QR code on the pack.

This is the difference between a grade written on a label and a grade backed by numbers. With Consortium saffron, you read the analysis of the lot in front of you.
